Paralogs are genes that are related due to a past duplication of the gene in the genome. The genes that duplicate are free to mutate and considerably change funtion (or become functionless) over time because there is the original gene to maintain necessary function. Generally, paralogs within a genome are closely related genes that serve different functions after a gene duplication event has occured.
