In molecular biology, an indel refers to an insertion or deletion of nucleotides in a DNA sequence. The term is used broadly, in that it can refer to not only a single mutation but multiple. Therefore the consequences of an indel event vary broadly, from frameshift mutations (if it does not occur in a multiple of three) to nonsense mutations.
