A genetic map is the representation, either descriptive or graphic of the genes located within a chromosome. The map may indicate which genes are located within the specified chromosome or may simply show the DNA sequence.

These maps can be generated through either genetic analysis or physical methods.

Genetic Mapping can also be of clinical relevance as it can be used to identify mutations associated with inherited disease. Through analysis of genetic maps within a family researchers are able to uncover the identity and number of genes mutated as well as the gene location on a chromosome.
