Archaea share some characteristics with known pathogens that may reflect the potential to cause disease (i.e. access to host - opportunity, capabilities for long-term colonization and coexistence with endogenous flora in host). Archaea present in humans are Methanogenes. Some of these Archaea were for example identified in periodontonal disease.
